Nouns in English Grammar


 

?What is a Noun

A noun is a word used to name:

a person (teacher, Ali)
a place (school, Egypt)
a thing (book, phone)
an idea or feeling (love, happiness)

Types of Nouns

1️⃣ Common Nouns

These are general names for people, places, or things.
Examples:

boy
city

➡️ Written with a small letter.


2️⃣ Proper Nouns

These are specific names of people, places, or things.
Examples:

Ahmed
London

➡️ Always start with a capital letter.


3️⃣ Countable Nouns

Nouns that can be counted.
Examples:

one apple / two apples
a car / cars

➡️ They have singular and plural forms.


4️⃣ Uncountable Nouns

Nouns that cannot be counted directly.
Examples:

water
milk
money

➡️ They do not have plural forms and are not used with a / an.


5️⃣ Singular and Plural Nouns

Singular: book
Plural: books

Most plural nouns are formed by adding -s, but there are irregular forms:

child → children
man → men
mouse → mice

6️⃣ Possessive Nouns

Used to show ownership by adding ’s.
Examples:

Ali’s book
the girl’s bag

7️⃣ Concrete and Abstract Nouns

Concrete nouns: can be seen or touched

table, phone

Abstract nouns: ideas or feelings

love, freedom
